The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a unique decision path.

The series is also notoriously flexible, letting players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Virtually all objectives can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can anticipate a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
