Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his players had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
