At least thirteen passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the head of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been operating in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
